(How-to) Diaper Cakes and accessories

December 30, 2008 at 10:39 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , )

Diaper cakes are on the rise for new mothers and baby showers.  They are so useful and practical that you would almost have no choice but to make sure the mother-to-be has one.

I first want to share that there are a few ways to make diaper cakes and there is no right or wrong way to make them.  I usually use the method of rolling the diapers and I have used the stacking method for other diaper cakes.  When custom ordered the preference is the buyer’s choice.

When starting a diaper cake gathering your materials seems to be less time consuming than trying to find all the accessories after the cake is made.  You also need the accessories because if you decide to add them inside the cake or as you go along it makes it much easier.

Depending on what kind of diaper cake you are making you need to gather blankets, bottles, pacifier, bib, socks, and any other accessory that you might want to include.

I like using receiving blankets because it gives the cake a clean look.  Also, blankets are a great gifts for the baby.

First start by rolling the diaper from the tabs this way they will not stick out later.  Place a small rubber-band around the middle of the diaper.  If  you want to use something different you can use curling ribbon and use those for the exterior layer of the cakes for a better look.  If you use rubber-bands that is fine as they will be hidden any way.

After rolling about 50 size 1 diapers you can begin assembling them.  I use long skinny wood sticks from Wal-mart or Micheals.  They cost about $1.99 for 20 of them.  That is the center for my diaper cakes.  These will work for three layer cakes and if you are only making a two layer cake you can cut off the top part.

Using a regular size rubber-band to hold all the diapers together you can then use curling ribbon to tie around your finished layer.  This will make the internal center of the cake sturdy.

I usually use the blanket for the biggest layer of the cake which is usually the bottom tier (layer).  I make the next tier a little smaller than the bottom tier.  The top tier is always the smallest no matter if you are making a two tier or three tier cake.  I add matching ribbon for the other tier’s giving it a look that is presentable.

When adding accessories you can add them during the building process or you can add them afterwards.  The accessories I use vary from cake to cake.  I know that some people like to use themes or a specific animal of choice.  Clicking here will take you to my accessory page where you can view or purchase great priced accessories.

I add accessories to the outside of the cake, between layers, between diapers, on top of the cake, and through-out the diaper cake.

If you have any questions about making a diaper cake or the stacking version of making diaper cakes please feel free to email or respond to the post.

New Twist on Diaper Designs

December 5, 2008 at 4:41 pm (Christmas gift, General, babies, baby shower, create diaper cakes, custom make, diaper cake businesses, diaper cakes, great gift ideas, how to, mother-to-be, new mother, practical, sale) (, , , , , , , , )

Towel Cake from Diaperdesigns.comI am looking for new twists on diaper designs.   I have recently made a diaper candy cane. I made it simple but many things can be added to it.  I would love to see some other diaper creations that every one else has come up with.  On my site I have also made some towel cakes and I am sure you have seen your fair share of those as well.  To the left is a picture of a towel cake from my online store, and it’s only $22.00!  Diaperdesigns.com
